Thermophilic iron-oxidizing bacteria found in copper leaching dumps.
Rod-shaped bacteria capable of oxidizing ferrous iron at 55 degrees C were cultured from samples of a copper mine leach dump. Yeast extract or cysteine was required by these Thiobacillus-like bacteria for growth, using ferrous iron as an energy source.
متن کاملRecombinant enzymes from thermophilic micro-organisms expressed in fungal hosts.
Cost-effective production of enzymes for industrial processes makes the appropriate selection of the host/vector expression system critical. We have tested two fungal systems for the bulk production of enzymes from thermophiles. The yeast Kluyveromyces lactis has been developed as a secretion host employing expression vectors based on the 2u-like plasmid pKD1 of Kluyveromyces drosophilarium. Ou...
متن کاملPrevalent organisms on ostrich carcasses found in a commercial abattoir.
The prevalent microbial growth on carcasses before and after overnight cooling in an ostrich abattoir and de-boning plant was investigated. The effect of warm or cold trimming of the carcasses was examined together with possible causes of contamination along the processing line. An attempt was made to link the prevalent microorganisms that were identified from carcasses to those from specific e...

متن کاملQuantitative evaluation of three commercial blood culture media for growth of anaerobic organisms.
The ability of three different commercial blood culture media--brain heart infusion broth (Pfizer), thiol broth (Difco), and PRS-peptone broth (Becton, Dickinson & Co.)--to support the growth of five different anaerobes is described. Inocula of 100 and 1,000 colony-forming units per ml were used to evaluate potential differences in survival, lag time, growth rate, and doubling times of each ana...
