Thermodynamics of glasses: a first principles computation
We propose a first principles computation of the thermodynamics of simple fragile glasses starting from the two-body interatomic potential. A replica formulation translates this problem into that of a gas of interacting molecules, each molecule being build of m atoms, and having a gyration radius (related to the cage size) which vanishes at zero temperature. We use a small cage expansion, valid...
متن کاملDehydrogenation Thermodynamics of Hydrogen Storage Material Manganese Borohydride: First-Principles Study
Ab initio calculations using DFT were performed to establish a stable crystal structure of Mn(BH4)2. The crystal structure of Mn(BH4)2 is found to be orthorhombic with space group Fddd (No. 70). The electronic density of states shows that manganese borohydride is of metallic nature without a band gap. Our calculations showed that the interaction between Mn atoms and BH4 complexes has an ionic c...
متن کاملFirst Principles Thermodynamics of Minerals at HP–HT Conditions: MgO as a Prototypical Material
Ab initio thermodynamic properties, equation of state and phase stability of periclase (MgO, B1-type structure) have been investigated in a broad P–T range (0–160 GPa; 0–3000 K) in order to set a model reference system for phase equilibria simulations under deep Earth conditions. Phonon dispersion calculations performed on large supercells using the finite displacement method and in the framewo...
متن کاملDouble structural transition in hybrid material MIL-53 upon hydrocarbon adsorption: the thermodynamics behind the scenes.
We rationalize the thermodynamics behind the guest-induced structural transitions of hybrid material MIL-53, showing that the existence of a double transition depends on the relative guest affinities for the two phases, rather than absolute adsorption enthalpies. Based on a simple model, we interpret recent experimental data on alkane adsorption and predict transition pressures.
متن کاملFirst - principles , atomistic thermodynamics for oxidation catalysis
Present knowledge of the function of materials is largely based on studies (experimental and theoretical) that are performed at low temperatures and ultra-low pressures. However, the majority of everyday applications, like e.g. catalysis, operate at atmospheric pressures and temperatures at or higher than 300 K. Here we employ ab initio, atomistic thermodynamics to construct a phase diagram of ...
