Thermal performance and life cycle assessment of corn cob particleboards

Corn cob is considered an agricultural bio-waste that can be reused and incorporated in the building industry as a thermal insulation material. However, more research required to obtain detailed analysis what concerns materials' performance using this waste raw material and, consequently, their sustainability profile. In context, study aims evaluate behaviour environmental impact of two different corn particleboards types glue binders: Polyvinyl Acetate (PVA) Fabricol AG222 (FAG222). An experimental was performed analyse particleboards’ performance, allowing estimation transmission coefficient. A carried out lifecycle assessment (LCA) tool according ISO 14040 14044. The functional unit “mass provide resistance (R) 1 m2°C/W″ for calculation impacts. production disposal phases (incineration landfill) were considered. results revealed both have potential used sustainable walls, considering values obtained parameters. Average 1.33 W/m2°C 0.052 W/m°C achieved coefficient conductivity PVA particleboard. For FAG222, those corresponded 1.92 0.087 W/m°C, showing similarities with current materials. Both options display environmentally friendly profiles, although particleboard offers enhanced when landfill preferred method. This work thus contribution scientific knowledge regarding valorisation agriculture wastes by-products eco-friendly Furthermore, applying reveals consistent path on circular economy.
