Thermal effects versus viscoelasticity in ice-rubber friction mechanisms

چکیده

This work presents an experimental analysis of the friction response ice-rubber interface over five decades sliding velocity and temperature down to − 20 ∘C, combining in-situ contact visualisation simultaneous force measurements. Viscoelastic properties rubber were varied in terms glassy transition elastic modulus. Based on area measurements, adhesive viscoelastic contributions identified. Even though a bell-shape friction-velocity curve was observed, classical WLF transform did not allow description behaviour. A simple analytical model accounting for thermal dissipation induced by thus proposed dimensionless master obtained with velocity, regardless material properties. From this curve, predictive proposed, which both contributions, adhesion-viscoelasticity dissipation, multiplicative rather than simply additive.

A tube concept in rubber viscoelasticity

A constitutive model is derived for the time-dependent response of particle-reinforced elastomers at finite strains. An amorphous rubbery polymer is treated as a network of long chains linked by permanent junctions (chemical crosslinks, entanglements and filler particles). A strand between two neighboring junctions is thought of as a sequence of mers whose motion is restricted to some tube by s...

Thermal effects on atomic friction.

We model friction acting on the tip of an atomic force microscope as it is dragged across a surface at nonzero temperatures. We find that stick-slip motion occurs and that the average frictional force follows (absolute value lnv)(2/3), where v is the tip velocity. This compares well to recent experimental work, permitting the quantitative extraction of all microscopic parameters. We calculate t...

Constrained Rouse model of rubber viscoelasticity.

In this work we use a new approach to investigate the equilibrium and linear dynamic-mechanical response of a polymer network. The classical Rouse model is extended to incorporate quenched constraints on its end-boundary conditions; a microscopic stress tensor for the network system is then derived in the affine deformation limit. To test the model we calculate the macroscopic stress in equilib...

Rubber friction and tire dynamics.

We propose a simple rubber friction law, which can be used, for example, in models of tire (and vehicle) dynamics. The friction law is tested by comparing numerical results to the full rubber friction theory (Persson 2006 J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 18 7789). Good agreement is found between the two theories. We describe a two-dimensional (2D) tire model which combines the rubber friction model wi...

Kinetic Friction of Ice Sliding Slowly over Itself : Physical Mechanisms

This paper addresses the coefficient of kinetic friction of relatively warm ice (-50 °C) sliding slowly (<1 m s) over itself and presents physical models to account for two characteristics: velocity-strengthening at lower speeds and velocity-weakening at higher speeds. The models are based upon a combination of creep deformation within a near-surface zone and frictional heating cum localized me...
