The variability of pan evaporation over China during 1961-2020

Abstract The most basic features of climatological normals and variability are useful for describing observed or likely future climate fluctuations. Pan evaporation ( E pan ) is an important indicator change; however, current research on has focused its change in mean rather than variability. monthly from 1961 to 2020 at 969 stations China was analyzed using a theoretical framework that can distinguish changes variance between space time. decomposed into spatial temporal components, the component further interannual intra-annual components. results show mainly controlled by component. time variance, decreasing continuously first 30 years, slightly increasing after 1990s. This due fact decrease wind speed increase water vapor pressure deficit with temperature offset each other inhibit . decreased more northern region, whereas it exhibited small slight southern region. reduction seasonality dominated spring, followed summer. differences season were caused differing rates driving forces, such as greater region spring. Significance Statement purpose this study better understand how under change. because describe fluctuations, fluctuation may have large impacts practices, agricultural production. Our findings showed drivers offsetting other. However, numerous changing change, necessary pay attention serving resources practice.
