The value of alien roadside trees for epiphytic lichen species along an urban pollution gradient

چکیده

Abstract Alien tree species have been introduced to Europe and often used as roadside trees. Currently, preference is given that are adapted urban climate drier conditions. Native epiphytic lichens local species; however, little known whether a shift toward more alien trees would affect the diversity of within cities. We considered three genera common in Hamburg (Germany) Acer, Tilia, Quercus, each with native an per genus. Species numbers, frequency were assessed compared. Tree locations grouped according classes increasing traffic volume proxy for air pollution. Mean bark pH values recorded individual. The pairs Quercus robur/rubra Acer platanoides/saccharinum showed significant differences abundance lichens, showing lower values. pair Tilia cordata/tomentosa did not show any differences. number nitrogen-tolerant lichen differed among all species. Lichen richness decreased pairs, thus demonstrating inhibiting effect on occurrence lichens. Bark between yet high resulted increased pH. In conclusion, two out had negative effects diversity. Further should be better estimate

Effect of automobile pollution on chlorophyll content of roadside urban trees

The effect of automobile pollution was determined on chlorophyll content of four different tree species viz. Azadirachta indica L., Conocarpus erectus L., Guiacum officinale L.and Eucalyptus sp. growing along the roads of the city.  Significant changes in the level of chlorophyll “a”, chlorophyll “b” and total chlorophyll “a+b” were found in the leaves of fou...

Lichen species co-occurrence patterns along an edge-interior Mediterranean forest gradient

The co-occurrence pattern of epiphytic lichen communities was evaluated relative to microenvironmental heterogeneity along an edge-interior forest gradient. We collected data on the occurrence of 57 epiphytic lichen species from 452 plots in a Mediterranean forest remnant. We used two realistic null models to test for non-randomness in the structure of epiphytic lichen communities and generaliz...

Alien molluscan species established along the Italian shores: an update, with discussions on some Mediterranean “alien species” categories

The state of knowledge of the alien marine Mollusca in Italy is reviewed and updated. Littorina saxatilis (Olivi, 1792), Polycera hedgpethi Er. Marcus, 1964 and Haminoea japonica Pilsbry, 1895are here considered as established on the basis of published and unpublished data, and recent records of the latter considerably expand its known Mediterranean range to the Tyrrhenian Sea. COI sequences ob...

Seeing Red: Alien species along the Mediterranean coast of Israel

An overview is presented of the metazoan alien biota recorded from the Mediterranean coast of Israel. Of the 296 alien species, 284 have been introduced from the Red Sea/Indo West-Pacific through the Suez Canal. A brief history of the research on introduced species along the Israeli coast is presented along with the list of species, and their ecological and economic impacts are discussed.
