چکیده
Background: One of the fundamental factors in infants’ readiness to discharge from Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is attaining full oral feeding. Determining development requires instruments comprehensively assess skills and process Objectives: This study aimed measure validity reliability Early Feeding Skill assessment (EFS) subscales cue-based feeding (Oral Readiness scale (OFRS) Oral Quality (OFQS)). Methods: Participants consisted 30 preterm infants born at gestational age (GA) ≤ 34 weeks Dr. Shariati Hospital, Tehran University Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran. Infants were enrolled by convenience sampling. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) Weighted Kappa used reliability, Spearman Pearson’s coefficient test convergent discriminant validity. Results: The inter- intra-rater all dimensions EFS good (ICC ranged 0.77 0.95) except reliabiltiy for ability maintain physiologic stability coordinate swallowing was moderate. inter-rater scales excellent (Weighted > 0.74). reliablity indicated agreement OFRS = 0.73) OFQS 0.75). There an inverse between most (P < 0.05), 0.05). a significant dimension post menstrual (PMA) (r 38, 0.05) recovery GA 0.37, inversely correlated with PMA Conclusions: are valid reliable infants; however, using only one these solely evaluate not enough.

The early feeding skills assessment for preterm infants.
Preterm infants develop the skills necessary to begin oral feeding as their health stabilizes and as they reach a postconceptional age that supports coordination of breathing and swallowing with oral-motor functioning. The time from initiation of oral feeding to full oral feedings (with adequate intake for growth and maintenance of physiologic stability) can vary from days to months for the pre...
متن کاملValidation of the Early Feeding Skills Assessment Scale for the Evaluation of Oral Feeding in Premature Infants
Background: Feeding difficulties are common and important in premature infants. In order to identify neonatal feeding difficulties, clinicians and nurses require assessment tools to conduct an objective evaluation of infant oral feeding (breast/bottle-feeding). Early identification of infants with feeding difficulty is critical to implement appropriate therapies and op...
متن کاملA Review of Assessment Tools for Oral Feeding in Term and Preterm Infants
Background and purpose: Problems in oral feeding are common in infants, especially in preterm infants. Therefore, assessment of infants feeding could be of great help in making appropriate diagnosis for rehabilitation of swallowing. Therefore, comprehensive and accurate assessment tools are needed. The aim of this study was to review assessment tools used for infants oral feeding. Materials an...
متن کاملThe Effect of Oral Motor Intervention on Oral Feeding Readiness and Feeding Progression in Preterm Infants
Background: Advances in neonatal intensive care have markedly improved survival in preterm infants. These babies need hospitalization due to the immaturity of the respiratory and digestive systems. The timing for the initiation of proper feeding in premature infants admitted to neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) is an important challenge for physicians, parents, and...
متن کاملAssessment for oral feeding in preterm infants.
PURPOSE To assess the accuracy of the Preterm Oral Feeding Readiness Scale (POFRAS) on the beginning of oral feeding in preterm infants and to verify the concordance between this tool and the Oral Feeding Skill Level. METHODS 82 preterm infants were assessed by POFRAS regarding their readiness to initiate oral feeding and by the oral feeding skill level evaluation during the first oral feedin...
