The undervalued set piece: Analysis of soccer throw-ins during the English Premier League 2018–2019 season

Set pieces in soccer (i.e., free kicks and corners) have been examined detail are a common focus for coaches during training performance preparation. However, limited evidence is available on the impact of throw-ins if should dedicate time towards this specific set piece. Therefore, research aimed to firstly examine throw-in linked with performance, secondly effect direction length has first contact success rate, possession retention, mean shot creation. 16,154 from 380 English Premier League matches 2018–2019 season were analysed. Higher final league position was correlated increased retention. 83% throw-in’s resulted successful contact, 54% being retained 8.8% led at goal achieved after contact. Throw-in’s which went backwards or laterally success, retaining possession, The least efficient forwards long, both reduced Findings highlight, that throwing ball be players attacking training. In contrast, team’s defensive strategy reduce opportunities throw higher press look force long forward throw-in, therefore, increasing likelihood winning counter attacking.
