The Transmission of Vowel Harmony and Vowel Disharmony: An Iterated Learning Study

چکیده
Substantive bias affects phonological acquisition in a way that learners may more readily learn phonetically motivated patterns. Some previous experimental work has proved the effect of substantive synchronic context, whereas how influences diachronic changes hardly been studied. This paper investigates role transmission. We employed iterated learning paradigm to compare transmissions two artificial languages exhibiting vowel harmony (phonetically natural) or disharmony unnatural). In general, participants performed equally well conditions, and proportions patterns showed similar decreasing tendency over generations, suggesting no process language

Vowel Harmony and Disharmony in Tuvan and Tofa
Harmony systems are often described in the linguistic literature in a highly schematic and somewhat idealized fashion. Further, instances of disharmony within harmony languages typically have been treated as exceptional or anomalous, rather than as a natural and expected part of the harmony system. In documenting several vowel harmony languages indigenous to Siberia, we found both highly patter...
متن کاملLearning Vowel Harmony
It is possible to construct an unsupervised learning system for vowel harmony, which makes accessible general-isations. Furthermore, such a learning system can be constructed with little built-in knowledge, and, consequently, be applicable to data from a wide range of domains. This paper presents a learning system which fulllls these criteria, and examines the results of applying an implementat...
متن کاملvowel harmony and disharmony in the azerbaijani the turkish language
harmony and disharmony are generally considered in isolation in the phonological literature. this has led to a striking asymmetry in their analyses. in this article, it is argued that both phenomena call for a parallel treatment and that this can be accomplished within correspondence theory.correspondence theory provides a general framework for defining faithfulness constraints. what happens in...
متن کاملVowel Harmony and Subsequentiality
Attested and ‘pathological’ vowel harmony patterns are studied in the context of subclasses of regular functions. The analysis suggests that the computational complexity of phonology can be reduced from regular to weakly deterministic.
متن کاملVowel Harmony as a Distributional Learning Problem
Vowel harmony is a class of phonotactic restrictions in which vowels in a language are divided into two or more subclasses, and words must contain only vowels from only one such subclass regardless of intervening consonants. Languages worldwide (Turkish, Finnish, Mongolian, Warlpiri, but not English) exhibit vowel harmony. The opacity of such potentially long distance alternations poses a chall...
