TOTEM: The experiment to measure the total proton–proton cross section at LHC
TOTEM is an experiment dedicated to the measurement of the proton–proton total cross section (σ TOT ) at LHC, i.e. the probability that two protons interact at the center of mass energy of 14 TeV. In addition to that, it will also study the proton–proton elastic scattering and diffractive dissociation processes. TOTEM foresees specific measurements and experimental techniques which are very dif...
متن کاملThe Totem Experiment at the Lhc
In order to fulfil its physics programme the TOTEM experiment1 has to cope with the challenge of triggering and recording events in the very forward region with a good acceptance for particles produced at very small angles with respect to the beam. The evaluation of the total cross section with an error down to 1÷2% will in particular require the simultaneous measurement of the elastic scatteri...
متن کاملDiffraction and Total Cross-Section at the Tevatron and the LHC
At the Tevatron, the total pp̄ cross-section has been measured by CDF at 546GeV and 1.8 TeV, and by E710/E811 at 1.8 TeV. The two results at 1.8 TeV disagree by 2.6 standard deviations, introducing big uncertainties into extrapolations to higher energies. At the LHC, the TOTEM collaboration is preparing to resolve the ambiguity by measuring the total pp cross-section with a precision of about 1%...
متن کاملTotal cross-section at LHC from minijets and soft gluon resummation in the infrared region
A model for total cross-sections incorporating QCD jet cross-sections and soft gluon resummation is described and compared with present data on pp and ¯ pp cross-sections. Predictions for LHC are presented for different parameter sets. It is shown that they differ according to the small x-behaviour of available parton density functions.
متن کاملPrecise Measurement of the Total Cross Section and the Coulomb Scattering at the Lhc∗
A precise measurement of the total cross section and the Coulomb scattering at LHC requires the observation of elastically scattered particles at extremely small angles (14 μrad, −t ≤ 0.01 GeV for the first case; 3 μrad, −t ≤ 0.0006 GeV) for the second one). In this paper a very high-β insertion optics which fulfills both conditions is presented. A feasibility study, including the acceptance of...
