چکیده
We investigated the taxonomic status of recently described kukri snake Oligodon arenarius Vassilieva, 2015 and morphologically similar macrurus (Angel, 1927), two species endemic to southern coast Vietnam. Based on phylogenetic analyses using three mitochondrial genes (12S–16S rRNA, cytochrome b ), we recovered O. in a clade within cyclurus-taeniatus group, agreeing with previous intrageneric classifications. Genetic distances between are extremely low (less than 0.5% based 12S–16S) render paraphyletic. All preserved specimens convey little no differences color pattern, hemipenial morphology osteological features; latter which is dimensional micro computer tomography (µCT) scans one specimen per species. Contrasting these results, univariate multivariate revealed significant relative tail length, number ventral subcaudal scales both Although molecular morphological datasets present conflicting integrating evidence leads us synonymize . provide formal redescription , designate neotype avoid future confusion, first detailed description this sensu stricto coastal dunefields adjacent forest habitats Vietnam, where ongoing human development, tourism road mortality pose threats its conservation. Consequently, suggest that should be listed as “Vulnerable” assessment criteria International Union for Conservation Nature (IUCN).

A new species of Kukri Snake (Oligodon Fitzinger, 1826; Squamata: Colubridae) from the Cat Tien National Park, southern Vietnam.
We describe a new species of the genus Oligodon from the lowland forests of Cat Tien National Park, Dong Nai Province, in southern Vietnam. Oligodon cattienensis sp. nov. is distinguished from the remaining Southeast Asian kukri snakes by the combination of the following characters: medium-sized, deeply forked hemipenes without spines, 17-17-15 dorsal scale rows, nasal entire, 2 small postocula...
متن کاملTaxonomic Status of the Snake Genera Conopsis and Toluca (Colubridae)
The taxonomic history of the colubrid genera Conopsis and Toluca is complex and has been reviewed by Goyenechea and Flores-Villela (2000). The single character purportedly differentiating them has been called into question by several authors (e.g., Bogert and Oliver, 1945). Some workers recognize just one genus for this group (Bogert and Oliver, 1945; Goyenechea, 1995), whereas others have rega...
متن کاملThe phylogenetic position and taxonomic status of the Rainbow Tree Snake Gonyophis margaritatus (Peters, 1871) (Squamata: Colubridae) .
Molecular phylogenies have provided strong evidence for clarifying the taxonomy of groups with ambiguous morphological traits, thus avoiding potentially misleading conclusions based on evolutionary convergence of these traits. For snakes, established molecular databases along with new sequences from rare species allows us to estimate phylogenies, to clarify the phylogenetic relationships and te...
