The role of coalitions at international tariff negotiations: a CGE perspective

نویسندگان

چکیده

Abstract Developing countries coalitions form an integral part of tariff negotiations that take place under the aegis World Trade Organization. While there was only a single coalition in 70s, their number increased to 31 year 2005. Despite apparent proliferation negotiations, little research on theoretical and empirical implications has been produced. In particular, we lack understanding efficiency equity effects coalitions. By exploring this equity-efficiency nexus, study finds developing like G-90 Least Developed Countries Group – while benefiting member lead less overall. Forming Cairns Group, however, leads more efficient equal distribution gains from trade.

To achieve this, many developing countries adopted trade liberalisation in the late 1980s, premised on the theoretical evidence based on the definitive Heckscher-Ohlin theory which predicts gains for the poor. The empirical support for this theory, however, is at best mixed. This paper employs ...
