The rate of adaptive evolution in enteric bacteria.
Here we estimate the rate of adaptive substitution in a set of 410 genes that are present in 6 Escherichia coli and 6 Salmonella enterica genomes. We estimate that more than 50% of amino acid substitutions in this set of genes have been fixed by positive selection between the E. coli and S. enterica lineages. We also show that the proportion of adaptive substitutions is uncorrelated with the ra...
متن کاملGenome evolution in enteric bacteria.
For more than a decade, the study of bacterial evolution has been dominated by the comparative analysis of nucleotide sequences within and among species. This approach, combined with the characterization of extensive regions of the chromosome by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, has led to new insights into the dynamics of bacterial genomes.

The evolution of insertion sequences within enteric bacteria.
To identify mechanisms that influence the evolution of bacterial transposons, DNA sequence variation was evaluated among homologs of insertion sequences IS1, IS3 and IS30 from natural strains of Escherichia coli and related enteric bacteria. The nucleotide sequences within each class of IS were highly conserved among E. coli strains, over 99.7% similar to a consensus sequence. When compared to ...
متن کاملExperimental Evolution: The Rate of Adaptive Evolution
Next-generation sequencing technology allows the identification of molecular changes that have arisen in the genomes of microorganisms undergoing experimental evolution. This permits the elucidation of the molecular evolutionary dynamics in these populations.
