The Potential Significance of Biting Midge (Culicoides Latrielle) Population in Nigeria

نویسندگان

چکیده

CULICOIDES species are well-known as troublesome biters and transmitters of various diseases to man animals. Surveys in Nigeria show Culicoides be well distributed throughout the vegetational zones. The possible direct indirect effects such a distribution on production discussed.

The salivary secretome of the biting midge, Culicoides sonorensis

Culicoides biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) are hematophagous insects with over 1400 species distributed throughout the world. Many of these species are of particular agricultural importance as primary vectors of bluetongue and Schmallenberg viruses, yet little is known about Culicoides genomics and proteomics. Detailed studies of members from other blood-feeding Dipteran families, incl...

Colonization of the Mediterranean basin by the vector biting midge species Culicoides imicola: an old story.

Understanding the demographic history and genetic make-up of colonizing species is critical for inferring population sources and colonization routes. This is of main interest for designing accurate control measures in areas newly colonized by vector species of economically important pathogens. The biting midge Culicoides imicola is a major vector of orbiviruses to livestock. Historically, the d...

Stress Proteins Elicited by Cold Shock in the Biting Midge, Culicoides variipennis sonorensis Wirth and Jones

In vivo protein expression in the abdominal viscera of C. v. slmorensis was examined from aduh flies that were cold shocked for various lengths of time at O, 10, or 15°C and labelled at 25°C with 35S-methionine at 0, 2, 4 and 6 hr during the recovery period. In vitro labelling showed that seven unique proteins (23, 40, 43, 48, 60, 70 and 92 kDa) were produced in C. v. sonorensis exposed to low ...

The immature stages of the biting midge Culicoides debilipalpis Lutz (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae)

The fourth instar larva and pupa of Culicoides debilipalpis Lutz, 1913 are described, illustrated, and photomicrographed from material collected in tree-holes of Salix sp. in Entre Rios Province, Argentina by using binocular, phase-contrast, and scanning electron microscopy. Measurements of instars I–IV are also presented. The larva shows features typical to carnivorous-predatory larvae, as wel...

Collection and analysis of salivary proteins from the biting midge Culicoides nubeculosus (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae).

Salivary proteins of hematophagous Culicoides spp. are thought to play an important role in pathogen transmission and skin hypersensitivity. Analysis of these proteins, however, has been problematic due to the difficulty in obtaining adequate amounts of secreted Culicoides saliva. In the current study, a collection method for midge saliva was developed. Over a 3-d period, 3- to 5-d-old male and...
