The Potential Ozone Impacts of Landfills
نویسندگان
چکیده
Landfill gas produces ozone precursors such as nitrogen oxides and formaldehyde when combusted in flares or stationary engines. Solid waste landfills are also the third largest anthropogenic source of methane United States. Methane is both a greenhouse tropospheric precursor. Despite its low photochemical reactivity, may noticeably affect urban if released large quantities along with other organic compounds landfill gas. A fine-scale 3D Eulerian chemical transport model was used to demonstrate that, under meteorological background conditions conducive high concentrations, typical emissions from single hypothetical result persistent daytime additions over 1 part per billion (ppb) by volume tens kilometers downwind. Large leaks can enhance this pollution tenth ppb, external sources non-methane further exacerbate impact. In addition, combustion increase near-source exposure toxic well half ppb. Southeast Michigan, combined influence several upwind key monitoring sites contribute significantly observed exceedances U.S. standard.

Potential impacts of CF3I on ozone
Iodotrifluoromethane (CF 3 I) has been considered to be a candidate replacement for bromotrifluoromethane (CF 3 Br), which is used in aircraft for fuel inerting and for fire fighting. In this study, the chemical effects of aircraft-released CF 3 I on atmospheric ozone were examined with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign 5 two-dimensional chemical-radiative-transport (UIUC 2-D CRT) ...
متن کاملImpacts of ozone on trees and crops
In this review article, we explore how surface-level ozone affects trees and crops with special emphasis on consequences for productivity and carbon sequestration. Vegetation exposure to ozone reduces photosynthesis, growth, and other plant functions. Ozone formation in the atmosphere is a product of NOx, which are also a source of nitrogen deposition. Reduced carbon sequestration of temperate ...

متن کاملThe surface impacts of Arctic stratospheric ozone anomalies
In the Arctic stratosphere, total column ozone in the spring can vary, from year to year, by as much as 30%. This large interannual variability, however, is absent from many presentgeneration climate models, in which the prescribed seasonal cycle of stratospheric ozone includes, at best, smooth multi-decadal trends. We here investigate the extent to which interannual variability in Arctic strat...
