The potential of marine bivalve Spisula sachalinensis as a marine temperature record

This paper presents a four year subannual isotope marine temperature record using modern Spisula sachalinensis specimens from Tomakomai (Hokkaido's Pacific coast, Japan). species is commonly found in pre- and protohistoric shell middens faunal assemblages around the Seas of Japan Okhotsk, so has significant potential as an indicator past and, by inference, climatic conditions. However, previous sclerochronological research on species’ growth shown geographical variation pattern, rendering palaeoclimatic interpretation difficult. To address this issue, study applied sequential isotopic analysis to two sectioned valves, providing proxy for sea surface (SST) allowing direct identification seasonality during growth. The sequences span years growth, confirmed visually identified patterns oxygen stable results, which show clear annual cycles δ18O. δ13C less clear, but shows weak inverse correlation with potentially relating primary productivity. Annual lines that occurs both warmer cooler SSTs, more rapid seasons. consistent warm-season minima seen shells Hakodate Bay Kato Hamai (1975), not their suggestion it associated growing at southern limits distribution. Comparison average local SST δ18O-derived falls within expected range, but, contrary expectations given preferential cool-season appears biased towards temperatures. Factors could contribute are discussed. Overall, considered useful complement macro/microscopic building holistic picture high resolution palaeoenvironmental studies SST.
