The Pink Tide and Income Inequality in Latin America

ABSTRACT Latin American countries experienced a significant reduction in income inequality at the turn of twenty-first century. From early 2000s to around 2012, average Gini coefficient fell from 0.51 0.47. The period falling coincided with leftist presidential candidates achieving electoral victories across region: by 2009, 11 17 had president—the so-called Pink Tide. Using difference-in-differences design, range econometric models, measurements, and samples, this study finds evidence that governments lowered faster than non-leftist regimes, increasing share captured first 7 deciles expense top 10 percent. analysis suggests was achieved social pensions, minimum wages, tax revenue.
