The Paleogene continental basins from SE France: New geographic and climatic insights from an integrated approach

New insights into the geodynamic evolution, paleogeographic framework and paleoclimatic setting of Upper Eocene-Oligocene lacustrine basins from South-East France have been provided by an integrative approach combining geochronology, micropaleontology stable isotope analyses. UPb dating on calcite, pollen-based climatostratigraphy strontium sulfur signatures sulfates a robust chronostratigraphic for Eocene Oligocene succession Vistrenque, Alès Roussillon basins. The thick Priabonian- lower Rupelian Vistrenque Basin is interpreted to be deposited in strike-slip basin associated with latest stages pyrenean shortening. Floral assemblages are used reconstruct vegetation cover systems their neighbouring lowlands highlands. Composition saltwater inferred sulfates, occurrence calcareous nannofossils, dinoflagellate cysts pollen grains mangrove-related plants strong evidence marine intrusions during Priabonian Chattian. Paleogeographic reconstructions Southeast late strongly suggest incursions Alpine Sea via two potential pathways: upper Rhône Valley Crest Sill Haut-Var Pyrenean synclines. On other hand, evaporite Camargue area subjected Western Mediterranean following collapse eastern relief Liguro-Provençal rifting stage. Finally, analysis Climate Amplitude Method revealed brief but significant stage cooling aridification at very base which could represent regional terrestrial expression global climate Transition.
