The Norm Establishment in WhatsApp Group Conversations

This linguistics study aims to observe the development of norms in WhatsApp Groups (WAGs). Over years, linguists have devoted their time theorizing im/politeness evaluations and linguistic interactions computer-mediated communication (CMC). However, virtual not gained adequate attention. systematically documented examined conversations 539 members three WAGs describe group communication. The data obtained were enhanced through anecdotal evidence experiences acquired joining other WAGs. indicated four sources norms: creating group, framing unmarked behaviors, positive or negative members' utterances actions. alignments toward non-virtual individual social also significantly affect negotiating WAG norms.
