Stochastic Composition and Stochastic Timbre: GENDY3 by Iannis Xenakis
GENDY3 BY IANNIS XENAKIS is a stochastic music work entirely produced by a computer program written in 1991 by the composer himself at CEMAMu. The work GENDT3 is the continuation of the series of stochastic music works that Xenakis inaugurated in 1955 with Metastasis. In GENDT3, the use of stochastic rules is more deeply systematic, as the composer says in his recent publication (Xenakis 1991b)...
متن کاملSTRUCTURE AND SYMMETRY IN IANNIS xENAKIS’ NOMOS ALPHA FOR CELLO SOLO
We discuss the interplay between structure and symmetry in the compositional process of Iannis Xenakis’ Nomos Alpha for cello (1965). Following the composer’s indications provided in many of his theoretical writings, we describe the structure of the piece, which is directly provided by the combinatorial properties of a double Fibonacci process applied to a particular symmetry group. We then pre...

The Centre Iannis Xenakis is a continuation of Les Ateliers UPIC, the association founded in 1985 by Iannis Xenakis and Maurice Fleuret, to promote the machine for composing music by drawing, invented by Iannis Xenakis in 1977, called UPIC (Unité Polyagogique Informatique du CEMAMu). Since December 2010, the University of Rouen (France) welcomes the Centre Iannis Xenakis (CIX) on its premises. ...
متن کاملStochastics and Granular Sound in Xenakis' Electroacoustic Music ()
In some of his early electroacoustic pieces, Xenakis pursued ground-breaking explorations in territories that, in retrospect, appear quintessential to his work in general. If we consider those electroacoustic works alongside with orchestra music like Pithoprakta (1955-56) and Achorripsis (1956-57), we get a composite picture where the theory of "stochastic music" is often managed in conjunction...
متن کاملThe Interactive Dynamic Stochastic Synthesizer
Throughout musical history new sounds and instruments have opened new opportunities for music making. In this paper we outline a new interactive digital instrument that implements the dynamic stochastic synthesis algorithm devised by Iannis Xenakis. We discuss the history and operation of this synthesis process, previous implementations of it, and how our implementation is the first we know of ...
