The mainstream school experiences of adolescent autistic girls

Research into the school experiences of autistic adolescents tends to utilise predominantly male samples, effectively neglecting views girls. This study explores perspectives three girls attending a mainstream secondary recognised for its good autism practice. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with girls, their mothers and therapeutic member staff at school. Findings highlight unique common challenges including anxiety resulting from sensory issues inconsistencies in understanding individual need. Implications practice include ensuring effective sharing information about needs specialised support developing social skills, enable navigate complexity female friendships during adolescence.
