The Late Cretaceous batholithic massifs of Sierra La Laguna and Sierra La Trinidad, southern Baja California, Mexico: constraints on extensional structures from geology, geochronology, and thermobarometry

چکیده

The Los Cabos Block, at the southern end of Baja California, exposes part Late Cretaceous Peninsular Ranges Batholith over 2700 km2. In block, Batholitic Complex is exposed in two massifs, Sierra La Laguna to west and Trinidad east. sierras are separated by ~75 km long, N-S striking, San José del Cabo extensional fault system, homonymous basin. Here, we present field observations, new U–Pb Ar–Ar ages, thermobarometric determinations constrain magmatic history this composite batholith structural relations between Trinidad. Field observations show that comprises several granodiorite bodies, felsic sills, dikes with complex magma mingling mixing features typical an upper-middle crustal system within a mush zone intermediate silicic composition. zircon crystallization ages for massif define main period plutonism ~89.9 73.9 Ma, progressively younger from Zircon chemistry published whole-rock isotopic data point mantle contributions arc magmatism significant thickening time. Hornblende thermobarometry suggests wide range interval (depth: 12–18 km; temperature: 670–740°C). has more narrow compositional range, like those eastern, lower depth, indicating it represents shallower portion system. integration our study previous research indicates hanging wall block which implies low angle geometry (<30°) older age activation than previously considered (>18 Ma).

The Lambeosaurine Dinosaur Magnapaulia laticaudus from the Late Cretaceous of Baja California, Northwestern Mexico

The taxonomy, osteology, phylogenetic position, and historical biogeography of the lambeosaurine hadrosaurid Magnapaulia laticaudus (new combination) are revised. The diagnosis of this species is amended on the basis on two autapomorphies (i.e., longest haemal arches of proximal caudal vertebrae being at least four times longer than the height of their respective centra; base of prezygapophyses...

Buoyancy sources for a large, unrooted mountain range, the Sierra Nevada, California Evidence from xenolith thermobarometry

Xenoliths hosted by Cenozoic volcanic flows and plugs from the Central Sierra Nevada and Eastern Sierra Nevada, Owens Valley, and Inyo Mountains were studied for petrography and thermobarometry. The Central Sierra Nevada suite consists of abundant lower crustal feldspathic granulites, garnet clinopyroxenites, and mantle-derived peridotites and garnet websterites. Mafic crustal assemblages occur...

Goat milk fatty acid composition in the Peninsula of Baja California, Mexico Composición de la grasa láctea de cabras en la Península de Baja California, México

Objective. The objective of the study was to determine the composition of fatty acids in milk of Creole goats in an extensive production system in an arid region of the peninsula of Baja California and compare it to two seasons of the year (rainy and dry). Materials and methods. Sampling was conducted during the dry season (June) and after the rainy season (December) in the municipality of Como...

Thermal evolution and exhumation of deep-level batholithic exposures, southernmost Sierra Nevada, California

The Tehachapi complex lies at the southern end of the Sierra Nevada batholith adjacent to the Neogene-Quaternary Garlock fault. The complex is composed principally of high-pressure (8–10 kbar) Cretaceous batholithic rocks, and it represents the deepest exposed levels of a continuous oblique crustal section through the southern Sierra Nevada batholith. Over the southern ~100 km of this section, ...

Role of extrusion of the Rand and Sierra de Salinas schists in Late Cretaceous extension and rotation of the southern Sierra Nevada and vicinity

[1] The Rand and Sierra de Salinas schists of southern California were underplated beneath the southern Sierra Nevada batholith and adjacent Mojave‐Salinia region along a shallow segment of the subducting Farallon plate in Late Cretaceous time. Various mechanisms, including return flow, isostatically driven uplift, upper plate normal faulting, erosion, or some combination thereof, have been pro...
