The Kalaotoa Fault: A Newly Identified Fault that Generated the Mw 7.3 Flores Sea Earthquake

چکیده

Abstract We reveal the existence of a previously unknown fault that generated Mw 7.3 Flores Sea earthquake, which occurred on 14 December 2021, approximately 100 km to north Island, in one most complex tectonic settings Indonesia. use double-difference method relocate hypocenters mainshock and aftershocks, determine focal mechanisms using waveform inversion, then analyze stress changes estimate type transfer. Our relocated show this earthquake sequence ruptured at least three segments: source mechanism exhibits dextral strike-slip motion (strike N72°W dip 78° NE) west–east-trending we call Kalaotoa fault, whereas rupture other two segments located west east (striking west-northwest southeast, respectively) may have been triggered by earthquake. The Coulomb change imparted these nearby faults is investigated, with focus regions experience increase few associated aftershocks. Of particular interest are increases central back-arc thrust just north–south-striking Selayar northwest our study region, both be increased risk failure as result unusual sequence.

Remotely Triggered Seismicity on the United States West Coast following the Mw 7.9 Denali Fault Earthquake

The Mw 7.9 Denali fault earthquake in central Alaska of 3 November 2002 triggered earthquakes across western North America at epicentral distances of up to at least 3660 km. We describe the spatial and temporal development of triggered activity in California and the Pacific Northwest, focusing on Mount Rainier, the Geysers geothermal field, the Long Valley caldera, and the Coso geothermal field...

Fault - perpendicular aftershock clusters following the 2003 Mw = 5 . 0 Big Bear , California , earthquake

[1] To explore aftershock-triggering mechanisms for the 2003 Big Bear, California earthquake sequence, we determined differential travel-times and applied the double-difference technique to relocate these events, which formed three clusters. The main cluster coincides with the 3 km long northwest striking sub-vertical mainshock fault. The other two sub-vertical clusters, located at opposite end...

Quantifying near-field and off-fault deformation patterns of the 1992 Mw 7.3 Landers earthquake

Coseismic surface deformation in large earthquakes is typically measured using field mapping and with a range of geodetic methods (e.g., InSAR, lidar differencing, and GPS). Current methods, however, either fail to capture patterns of near-field coseismic surface deformation or lack preevent data. Consequently, the characteristics of off-fault deformation and the parameters that control it rema...

Scaling of earthquake fault parameters

The long-standing conflict between the predictions of elastic dislocation models and the observation that average coseismic slip increases with rupture length is resolved with application of a simple displacement-depth function and assumption that the base of the seismogenic zone does not result from the onset of viscous relaxation, but rather a transition to stable sliding in a medium that rem...
