Beyond the sine law of plant gravitropism.

T he great German plant physiologist Wilhelm Pfeffer rightly claimed that “no plant is entirely without the power of movement” (1). If this fact remains underappreciated, it is perhaps because plant movements typically unfold over minutes, hours, or days, and thus exceed the attention span of all but the most dedicated observer. Among the large array of plant movements, the tropisms—that is, th...

The Magic Calculator and The Sine Addition Formula

Students who have grown up with computers and calculators may take their capabilities for granted, but I find something magical about entering arbitrary values and computing transcendental functions such as the sine and cosine with the punch of a button. While the calculation seems like "white magic", the calculator operates like a "black box" we don’t teach our trigonometry students what happe...

On the Fresnel Sine Integral and the Convolution

The Fresnel sine integral S(x), the Fresnel cosine integral C(x), and the associated functions S + (x), S − (x), C + (x), and C − (x) are defined as locally summable functions on the real line. Some convolutions and neutrix convolutions of the Fresnel sine integral and its associated functions with x r + , x r are evaluated. 1. Introduction. The Fresnel integrals occur in the diffraction theory...

Sine Function Quadrature Rules for the Fourier Integral

In this paper a numerical algorithm is proposed for the computation of the Fourier Transform. The quadrature rule developed is based on the Whittaker Cardinal Function expansion of the integrand and a certain Conformai Map. The error of the method is analyzed and numerical results are reported which confirm the accuracy of the quadrature rule.

The Sparse Cardinal Sine Decomposition applied to Stokes integral equations

Numerical simulations of two-phase flows driven by viscosity (e.g. for bubble motions in glass melting process) rely on the ability to efficiently compute the solutions to discretized Stokes equations. When using boundary element methods to track fluid interfaces, one usually faces the problem of solving linear systems with a dense matrix with a size proportional to the system number of degrees...
