The Infrared Spectra of Polymers III: Hydrocarbon Polymers
نویسندگان
چکیده
We continue to examine the spectra of polymers because they are important materials, and this exercise makes for an excellent infrared (IR) spectral interpretation review. In installment, we look at more hydrocarbon polymers, including polypropylene polystyrene. IR these materials in detail, see how spectroscopy can be used distinguish them from each other.

Infrared Spectra of High Polymers . II . Polyethylene *
The infrared spectrum of polyethylene has been obtained between about 3000 cm-1 and 70 em-I, polarization measurements on oriented specimens having been obtained to about 350 em-l. Assignments of the fundamentals are made with the help of a group theory analysis. The assignment of the controversial CH. wagging mode is discussed in detail and especially in terms of new evidence from the spectra ...
متن کاملSpectra of graphs and semi-conducting polymers
We study the band gap in some semi-conducting polymers with two models: Hückel molecular orbital theory and the socalled free electron model. The two models are directly related to spectral theory on combinatorial and metric graphs. Our numerical results reproduce qualitatively experimental results and results from much more complex density-functional calculations. We show that several trends c...
متن کاملNEXAFS spectra of some common polymers
Near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) microscopy has evolved into a powerful characterization tool for polymeric materials. The foundation of this utility depends crucially on the sensitivity of NEXAFS to the specific chemical structure of the polymer. Furthermore, for quantitative compositional analysis, reliable reference spectra with known energy resolution and calibrated energy...
متن کاملSelection Rules for the Vibrational Spectra of High Polymers
With the aid of the Born cyclic postulate, the selection rules for the vibrational modes of a crystalline polymer and an oriented infinite chain-molecule have been discussed. The necessary conditions for the modes to be active in the infrared or Raman spectrum have been deduced from the translation group of the crystal or of the chain. Approximate methods have also been discussed for a finite c...
متن کاملElectronic Properties of Random Polymers: Modelling Optical Spectra of Melanins
Melanins are a group of complex pigments of biological origin, widely spread in all species from fungi to man. Among diverse types of melanins, the human melanins, eumelanins, are brown or black nitrogen-containing pigments, mostly known for their photoprotective properties in human skin. We have undertaken theoretical studies aimed to understand absorption spectra of eumelanins and their chemi...
