The GAPS experiment: Low-energy antinuclei measurements for dark matter searches

نویسندگان

چکیده

GAPS (General Anti-Particle Spectrometer) is a balloon-borne experiment designed to measure low-energy (<0.25 GeV/n) cosmic antinuclei (i.e., antiprotons, antideuterons, and antihelium nuclei) as signature of dark matter annihilation or decay. According viable beyond-the-Standard Model theories, the predicted signal in antideuterons nuclei channels several orders magnitude higher than astrophysical background. The will conduct series at least three long-duration balloon flights high altitudes from Antarctica. instrument composed Si(Li) tracker surrounded by Time-of-Flight system made plastic scintillators. uses novel exotic-atom detection technique which an antinucleus captured material forms exotic atom. This excited atom decays within order nanoseconds emitting X-rays specific energies defined atomic transitions annihilates secondary particles (mainly pions protons). measured quantities (e.g., dE/dx, time flight, vertex position, energies, etc.) allow for identifying with precision.

Cold Dark Matter Searches with the CDMS-II Experiment

The CDMS-II collaboration operates an experiment at the Soudan Mine, Minnesota to directly detect cold dark matter in the form of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles. The detectors are Ge (and Si) crystals of mass 250 g (100 g) cooled to 30 mK and detect both the ionization and athermal phonon signals after a particle interacts in the Ge (Si) material. The athermal phonon readout utilizes supe...

Results of Dark Matter Searches with the Macro Experiment

MACRO was a large multipurpose underground detector located in the Hall B of the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. The detector, which took data until December 2000, was arranged in a modular structure of six “supermodules” with global dimensions of 76.5 × 12 × 9.3m and a total acceptance of ∼ 10, 000 msr to an isotropic flux of particles. It was made by several layers of liquid scintillatio...

Direct searches for dark matter

In the last decade considerable additional evidence has been gathered supporting the hypothesis that at least 90% of the mass in the universe is dark: it does not emit or absorb any form of electromagnetic radiation. Understanding this dark matter has become one of the more central problems in astronomy and cosmology. Once a subject of controversy among astronomers, its existence is now well es...

Experimental Searches for Dark Matter

There is now an enormously rich variety of experimental techniques being brought to bear on experimental searches for dark matter, covering a wide range of suggested forms for it. The existence of "dark matter", in some form or other, is inferred from a number of relatively simple observations and the problem has been known for over half a century. To explain "dark matter" is one of the foremos...
