The Existential Nihilism Scale (ENS): Theory, Development, and Psychometric Evaluation

Existential nihilism is a worldview characterized by the belief that totality of existence meaningless and any attempt to change or rectify this, with goal establishing meaning, futile. Despite rich but often ambiguous philosophical cultural history existential nihilism, its impact on mental health society remains largely unknown due gap in scientific measurement literature. To address this gap, an 8-item scale measuring proposed construct was rigorously developed tested accordance psychometric theory development guidelines. Two identical studies were conducted undergraduate sample (N = 329) community 307) evaluate scale’s item quality, reliability, internal structure, convergent validity, concurrent discriminant incremental validity. Evaluation Nihilism Scale (ENS) provided evidence strong properties. This new measure promises contribute future research examining health, wellbeing, social outcomes.
