The efficiency of elemental geochemistry and weathering indices as tracers in aeolian sediment provenance fingerprinting

چکیده
Confirmation of cost-effective and reliable tracers for aeolian sediment (sand dune) source fingerprinting warrants further research. Accordingly, the main objective work reported in this paper was to investigate efficiency weathering indices using a case study fragile arid region Qom Province, Iran. Eight geochemical elements (Al, Ca, Fe, K, Na, Mg, Si, Ti) 17 associated were measured 34 samples 10 sand dune target three absolute particulate size fractions. For each fraction, final composite fingerprints (i.e., only, only combination two) discerning ascribing sources selected. The Modified MixSIR Bayesian un-mixing model used apportion contributions fingerprints. Regardless fingerprint used, all results across different fractions suggested that south-eastern alluvial fan is dominant (average contribution 50.6%, SD 19.0%) samples, with western being second most important 38.4%, 20.4%) source. Comparisons posterior distributions predicted proportions generated nine (three kinds fingerprints*three particle fractions) showed combining powerful material discrimination. Our demonstrate use alongside more conventional elemental geochemistry investigations into provenance.

The mineralogy and geochemistry of Paleocene shales and interbedded siltstones in the southwestern of Ahar town (NW Iran) were studied by optical microscopy, XRD, SEM, XRF, and ICP-MS techniques. The mineralogical composition, mainly characterized by calcite, quartz, feldspar, dolomite, muscovite, magnesiohornblende, chlorite, illite, montmorionite, palygorskite, and koninckite, suggests relati...
متن کاملSediment fingerprinting in fluvial systems: review of tracers, sediment sources and mixing models
Suspended sediments in fluvial systems originate from a myriad of diffuse and point sources, with the relative contribution from each source varying over time and space. The process of sediment fingerprinting focuses on developing methods that enable discrete sediment sources to be identified from a composite sample of suspended material. This review identifies existing methodological steps for...
متن کاملSediment provenance in the Shudu Lake basin, northwest Yunnan Province, China, as revealed by composite fingerprinting
Composite fingerprinting represents an effective method of reconstructing sediment-source changes in remote areas where long-term hydrological and sediment accretion records do not exist. A ca. 50-year record of sediment deposition was determined for a small catchment at Shudu, situated in northwest Yunnan Province, China. Woodland, pasture, shrubland and channel bank material are identified as...
متن کاملSelecting Color-based Tracers and Classifying Sediment Sources in the Assessment of Sediment Dynamics Using Sediment Source Fingerprinting.
The use of sediment color as a fingerprint property to determine sediment sources is an emerging technique that can provide a rapid and inexpensive means of investigating sediment sources. The present study aims to test the feasibility of color fingerprint properties to apportion sediment sources within the South Tobacco Creek Watershed (74 km) in Manitoba, Canada. Suspended sediment from 2009 ...
