The Drake Passage opening from an experimental fluid dynamics point of view

چکیده
Abstract Pronounced global cooling around the Eocene–Oligocene transition (EOT) was a pivotal event in Earth’s climate history, controversially associated with opening of Drake Passage. Using physical laboratory model we revisit fluid dynamics this marked reorganization ocean circulation. Here show, seemingly contradicting paleoclimate records, that our experiments pathway yields higher values mean water surface temperature than “closed” configuration. This mismatch points to importance role ice albedo feedback plays investigated EOT-like transition, component is not captured model. Our conclusion supported by numerical simulations performed (GCM) intermediate complexity, where both and “open” configurations were explored, without active sea dynamics. The GCM results indicate temperatures would change opposite direction following an two settings, are therefore consistent experiment (slight warming after opening) paleoclimatic data (pronounced opening). It follows hypothetical case initially ice-free Antarctica continent could have become even warmer opening, scenario indicated paleotemperature reconstructions.

Timing and climatic consequences of the opening of Drake Passage.
Age estimates for the opening of Drake Passage range from 49 to 17 million years ago (Ma), complicating interpretations of the relationship between ocean circulation and global cooling. Secular variations of neodymium isotope ratios at Agulhas Ridge (Southern Ocean, Atlantic sector) suggest an influx of shallow Pacific seawater approximately 41 Ma. The timing of this connection and the subseque...
متن کاملNOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE Atmospheric Moisture Transport Moderates Climatic Response to the Opening of Drake Passage
The absence of the Drake Passage (DP) gateway in coupled models generally leads to vigorous Antarctic bottom water (AABW) formation, Antarctic warming, and the absence of North Atlantic deep-water (NADW) formation. Here the authors show that this result depends critically on atmospheric moisture transport by midlatitude storms. The authors use coupled model simulations employing geometries diff...
متن کاملMicroscopic dynamics in liquid metals: the experimental point of view
The experimental results relevant for the understanding of the microscopic dynamics in liquid metals are reviewed, with special regards to the ones achieved in the last two decades. Inelastic Neutron Scattering played a major role since the development of neutron facilities in the sixties. The last ten years, however, saw the development of third generation radiation sources, which opened the p...
متن کاملGeostrophic transport through the drake passage.
Geostrophic velocity and transport of water in the Drake Passage relative to a newly defined zero reference layer indicate that the circumpolar current is basically north of 59 degrees S, with its axis north 57 degrees S, and that the total volume transport exceeds 200 x 10(6) cubic meters per second. The calculated geostrophic velocities are consistent with results of descriptive water-structu...
متن کاملDark Matter from an experimental point of view
If Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) are the Dark Matter in the Galaxy, they can be detected directly in nuclear-recoil experiments or indirectly by observing their annihilation products. Limits obtained by the two techniques can be compared but this comparison requires some hypothesis about the WIMPs cross sections on nuclei and their annihilation branching ratios into neutrinos.
