The distributional effects of government spending shocks in developing economies

چکیده
We construct unanticipated government spending shocks for 103 developing countries from 1990 to 2015 and study their effects on income distribution. find that fiscal consolidations lead a long-lasting increase in inequality, while expansions lower inequality. The results are robust several measures of distribution size the shocks, an alternative identification strategy, across recessions country groups (low-income vs. emerging markets). An additional contribution paper is computation medium-term inequality multiplier. This average about 1 our sample, meaning cumulative decrease 1% gross domestic product over 5 years associated with Gini coefficient same period percentage point. multiplier larger total expenditure than public investment consumption (with former having effect), likely due redistributive role transfers. Finally, we (unanticipated) poverty.

The Distributional Consequences of Government Spending
This paper examines the mechanism through which pro-growth policies such as government spending on infrastructure might a¤ect the dynamics of inequality. We develop a model in which government-provided infrastructure is not only the engine of growth, but also a critical determinant of the distributions of wealth, income, and welfare. Government spending on infrastructure by itself is shown to b...
متن کاملThe effect of fiscal policy on social welfare due to government spending shocks, monetary and productivity
The most important issue for policymakers in optimal policy-making is to choose the tools that bring the equilibrium output to the desired level, with the least volatile income fluctuation. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of favorable fiscal policies on social welfare and business cycle management for the Iranian economy with respect to government spending shocks, m...
متن کاملExplaining the Effects of Government Spending Shocks on Consumption and the Real Exchange Rate
Using panel structural VAR analysis and quarterly data from four industrialized countries, we document that an increase in government purchases leads to an expansion in output and private consumption, a deterioration in the trade balance, and a depreciation of the real exchange rate (i.e., a decrease in the domestic CPI relative to the exchange-rate adjusted foreign CPI). We propose an explanat...
متن کاملThe Output and Welfare Effects of Government Spending Shocks over the Business Cycle∗
This paper studies the state-dependence of the output and welfare effects of shocks to government purchases in a canonical medium scale DSGE model. When monetary policy is characterized by a Taylor rule, the output multiplier (the change in output for a one unit change in government spending) is countercyclical but close to constant across states of the business cycle, whereas the welfare multi...
متن کاملDynamic employment and hours e!ects of government spending shocks
In this paper, we analyze the dynamic behavior of employment and hours worked per worker in a stochastic general equilibrium model with a matching mechanism between vacancies and unemployed workers. The model is estimated for the US using the Generalized Methods of Moments (GMM) estimation technique. An increase in government spending raises hours worked per worker, and crowds out private consu...
