Abstract Redundancy needs more precise characterization as it is a major factor in the evolution and robustness of networks multivariate interactions. We investigate complexity such interactions by inferring connection transitivity that includes all possible measures path length for weighted graphs. The result, without breaking graph into smaller components, distance backbone subgraph sufficient to compute shortest paths. This important understanding dynamics spread communication phenomena real-world networks. general methodology we formally derive yields principled reduction technique provides finer triangular geometry edges—those contribute paths those do not but are involved other network phenomena. demonstrate very small large across domains ranging from air traffic human brain connectome, revealing attacks failures seems stem surprisingly vast amounts redundancy.

The hierarchical backbone of complex networks.
Given any complex directed network, a set of acyclic subgraphs can be extracted that will provide valuable information about its hierarchical structure. This Letter presents how the interpretation of the network weight matrix as a transition matrix allows the hierarchical backbone to be identified and characterized in terms of the concepts of hierarchical degree, which expresses the total weigh...
متن کاملBackbone of complex networks of corporations: the flow of control.
We present a methodology to extract the backbone of complex networks based on the weight and direction of links, as well as on nontopological properties of nodes. We show how the methodology can be applied in general to networks in which mass or energy is flowing along the links. In particular, the procedure enables us to address important questions in economics, namely, how control and wealth ...
متن کاملExtracting the Globally and Locally Adaptive Backbone of Complex Networks
A complex network is a useful tool for representing and analyzing complex systems, such as the world-wide web and transportation systems. However, the growing size of complex networks is becoming an obstacle to the understanding of the topological structure and their characteristics. In this study, a globally and locally adaptive network backbone (GLANB) extraction method is proposed. The GLANB...
متن کاملExtracting the multiscale backbone of complex weighted networks
A large number of complex systems find a natural abstraction in the form of weighted networks whose nodes represent the elements of the system and the weighted edges identify the presence of an interaction and its relative strength. In recent years, the study of an increasing number of large-scale networks has highlighted the statistical heterogeneity of their interaction pattern, with degree a...
متن کاملDistance closures on complex networks
To expand the toolbox available to network science, we study the isomorphism between distance and Fuzzy (proximity or strength) graphs. Distinct transitive closures in Fuzzy graphs lead to closures of their isomorphic distance graphs with widely different structural properties. For instance, the All Pairs Shortest Paths (APSP) problem, based on the Dijkstra algorithm, is equivalent to a metric ...
