THE COPERNICAN MULTIVERSE OF SETS

چکیده

We develop an untyped framework for the multiverse of set theory. $\mathsf{ZF}$ is extended with semantically motivated axioms utilizing new symbols $\mathsf{Uni}(\mathcal{U})$ and $\mathsf{Mod}(\mathcal{U, \sigma})$, expressing that $\mathcal{U}$ a universe $\sigma$ true in $\mathcal{U}$, respectively. Here ranges over augmented language, leading to liar-style phenomena are analysed. The both compatible broad range conceptions suggests its own philosophically principles. In particular, closely linked deductive rule Necessitation theory can only prove statements it also proves hold all universes. argue this may be thought as Copernican principle background does not privileged position theories internal Our main mathematical result lemma encapsulating technique locally interpreting wide variety extensions our basic more familiar theories. apply show, such extensions, their consistency strength at most slightly above base $\mathsf{ZF}$, thus seriously limiting diversity set-theoretic multiverse. end case studies applying two theory: arithmetic absoluteness Joel D. The Continuum Hypothesis, the generic-multiverse of sets, and the Ω Conjecture

Is this really evidence (as is often cited) that the Continuum Hypothesis has no answer? Another prominent problem from the early 20th century concerns the projective sets, [8]; these are the subsets of Rn which are generated from the closed sets in finitely many steps taking images by continuous functions, f : Rn → Rn, and complements. A function, f : R→ R, is projective if the graph of f is a...

Evolution in the multiverse

In the Many Worlds Interpretation of quantum mechanics, the range of possible worlds (or histories) provides variation, and the Anthropic Principle is a selective principle analogous to natural selection. When looked on in this way, the “process” by which the laws and constants of physics is determined not too different from the process that gave rise to our current biodiversity, i.e. Darwinian...

Hamkins on the Multiverse

Ever since the rise of non-standard models and the proliferation of the independence results there have been two conflicting positions in the foundations of mathematics. The first position—which we shall call pluralism—maintains that certain statements of mathematics do not have determinate truth-values. On this view, although it is admitted that there are are practical reasons that one might g...

Complementarity in the Multiverse

In the multiverse, as in AdS, light-cones relate bulk points to boundary scales. This holographic UV-IR connection defines a preferred global time cut-off that regulates the divergences of eternal inflation. An entirely different cut-off, the causal patch, arises in the holographic description of black holes. Remarkably, I find evidence that these two regulators define the same probability meas...
