The Cobb-Douglas Marriage Matching Function: Marriage Matching with Peer and Scale Effects

نویسندگان

چکیده

Across states, there is little correlation between a state’s marriage rate or cohabitation and own population. Within positive (no) (cohabitation) its population growth rate. The Cobb-Douglas matching function (CDMMF), which extends the Choo-Siow MMF to include peer effects, can rationalize these correlations. model easy estimate. CDMMF estimated using panel data across US states from 1990 2010. replicates above scale effects. These effects are not sufficient explain large recent declines in gains marriage.

Marriage Matching with Correlated Preferences

Authors of experimental, empirical, theoretical and computational studies of two-sided matching markets have recognized the importance of correlated preferences. We develop a general method for the study of the effect of correlation of preferences on the outcomes generated by two-sided matching mechanisms. We then illustrate our method by using it to quantify the effect of correlation of prefer...

Simple Microfoundations for Cobb-Douglas Matching Functions

This paper derives a Cobb-Douglas matching function as the aggregate of the number of matches made by each firm in a large economy using results from the theory of heavy tail distributions. The model is then calibrated using the empirical distribution of firm sizes and stylized facts about social networks. The implied elasticity of the matching function is found to be close to those reported by ...

Marriage Matching and Intercorrelation of Preferences

Men’s and women’s preferences are intercorrelated to the extent that men rank highly those women who rank them highly. Intercorrelation plays an important but overlooked role in determining outcomes of matching mechanisms. We study via simulation the effect of intercorrelated preferences on men’s and women’s aggregate satisfaction with the outcome of the Gale-Shapley matching mechanism. We conc...

Marriage and Assortative Matching in Rural Ethiopia

This paper examines the determinants of human and physical capital at marriage. Using detailed data from rural Ethiopia, we Þnd ample evidence of assortative matching at marriage. Assets brought to marriage are distributed in a highly unequal manner. Sorting operates at a variety of levels — wealth, schooling, and work experience — that cannot be summarized into a single additive index. For Þrs...

Lifecycle marriage matching: Theory and evidence∗

The marriage market is a dynamic bilateral matching market with finitely lived participants. The growth rate of the number of marriages between two types of individuals estimates the systematic benefit to them delaying marriage for a period versus marrying immediately. Identification of the semi-parametric model is transparent. The model is estimated with 1990 US marriage data. The estimated mo...
