The C4 Atriplex halimus vs. the C3 Atriplex hortensis: Similarities and Differences in the Salinity Stress Response

چکیده

Soil properties and the ability to sustain agricultural production are seriously impaired by salinity. The cultivation of halophytes is seen as a solution cope with problem. In this framework, greenhouse pot experiment was set up assess salinity response in perennial C4 species Atriplex halimus, following three cultivars annual C3 hortensis: green, red, scarlet. four genotypes were grown for 35 days water (WS) ranging from 0 360 mM NaCl. Plant height fresh weight (FW) increased at vs. WS. stomatal conductance (GS) transpiration rate (E) more severely affected A. halimus than hortensis. This reflected lower leaf potential indicating stronger osmotic adjustment, higher relative content associated turgid leaves, PCA including all studied traits, GS E negatively correlated FW, which, turn, positively Na concentration intrinsic use efficiency (iWUE), that reduced gas exchange accumulation contributed iWUE under Finally, FTIR spectroscopy showed amount pectin, lignin, cellulose salinity, weakened cell wall structure. Overall, both remarkably adapted salinity: From an agronomic perspective, opposite strategies longer faster soil coverage, involved hortensis cv. scarlet, viable natural remedies revegetating marginal saline soils increasing organic carbon.

Study of the Atriplex halimus response to drought and salinity stress in the seedling stage

In order to study effect of the various levels of drought and salinity stress (0, -4, -8, -12, -16 bar) on morphological, physiological and biochemical traits of Atriplex halimus in seedling stage under hydroponic culture, two separated experiments were conducted as completely randomized design in three replications in hydroecology laboratory of Gonbad Kavous University...

Effect of Seed Weight and Salinity on the Germination of Garden Orache (Atriplex hortensis L.)

Garden orache (Atriplex hortensis L.), a halophytic forb in the family Chenopodiaceae, is well adapted to dry saline habitats. Here, we presented the results of the effect of salinity and seed weight on seed germination and radicle emergence of A. hortensis. Highest germination percentages were obtained under non-saline conditions and increases in salinity inhibited seed germination with less t...

Atriplex atacamensis and Atriplex halimus resist As contamination in Pre-Andean soils (northern Chile).

The Pre-Andean area of Chile exhibits saline soils of volcanic origin naturally contaminated with arsenic (As), and we hypothesise that revegetation with resistant species may be a valid alternative for soil management in this area. Thus, the xerophytic and halophytic shrubs Atriplex halimus and Atriplex atacamensis were cultivated in containers for 90 days in Pre-Andean soil, As-soil, (111±19 ...

The tolerance of Atriplex halimus L. to environmental stresses

Atriplex halimus L. (Amaranthaceae) (Mediterranean Saltbush) is a perennial, halophytic shrub that possesses the C4 photosynthetic anatomy and physiology. It grows under semi-arid and arid conditions (annual rainfall < 600 mm) from Macaronesia, through the Mediterranean basin countries and into western Asia, being particularly common on saline and degraded soils. Many studies have shed light on...

Comparative studies of C3 and C4 Atriplex hybrids in the genomics era: physiological assessments

We crossed the C3 species Atriplex prostrata with the C4 species Atriplex rosea to produce F1 and F2 hybrids. All hybrids exhibited C3-like δ(13)C values, and had reduced rates of net CO2 assimilation compared with A. prostrata. The activities of the major C4 cycle enzymes PEP carboxylase, NAD-malic enzyme, and pyruvate-Pi dikinase in the hybrids were at most 36% of the C4 values. These results...
