The Attitude of Older Patients to Deprescribing Polypharmacy in Ogun State, Nigeria

Background: Deprescribing has been suggested as a beneficial intervention to reduce polypharmacy among older patients. However, little is known about the willingness accept this patients in resource-limited settings. Objective: To evaluate attitudes of deprescribing polypharmacy. Methods: A quantitative, cross-sectional survey was carried out consecutively selected ambulatory aged ≥65 years who were on ≥5 chronic medications two secondary healthcare facilities Ogun State, southwest Nigeria. The 22-item revised Patients Attitude Towards questionnaire used participants' toward deprescribing, while another ten-question tool explored sociodemographic and clinical data. Logistic regression determine factors associated with deprescribe participants using global question, "If my doctor said it possible, I would be willing stop one or more regular medicines”. Results: Out 341 participants, majority females (60.7%), 90.0% 5-7 medications. About three-quarters (71.8%) strongly agreed that they “to their medicines if possible”. Female gender caregivers’ involvement medication management significantly (p = 0.07 p 0.01). Conclusions: Most predictive for deprescribing.
