The aerodynamics of flying snake airfoils in tandem configuration

چکیده

ABSTRACT Flying snakes flatten their body to form a roughly triangular cross-sectional shape, enabling lift production and horizontal acceleration. While gliding, they also assume an S-shaped posture, which could promote aerodynamic interactions between the fore aft body. Such have been studied experimentally; however, very coarse models of snake's shape were used, effects measured only for downstream model. In this study, resulting from posture approximated using two-dimensional anatomically accurate airfoils positioned in tandem mimic geometry during flight. Load cells used measure drag forces, flow field data obtained digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV). The results showed strong dependence performance on arrangement, with coefficients being generally more influenced than coefficients. Flow revealed that arrangement modified separated wake size, enhanced cases vortices formed closer models, producing suction dorsal surface. downforce created by separation ventral surface at 0 deg angle attack was another significant factor contributing production. A number showing large variations included configurations close most probable airborne flying snakes, suggesting small postural be control glide trajectory.

Unsteady Aerodynamics of Multiple Airfoils in Configuration

A potential flow model is used to study the unsteady flow past two airfoils in configuration, each of which is suddenly set into motion. The airfoil bound vortices are modeled using lumped vortex elements and the wake behind the airfoil is modeled by discrete vortices. This consists of solving a steady state flow problem at each time-step where unsteadiness is incorporated through the “zero nor...

Aerodynamics of intermittent bounds in flying birds

Flap-bounding is a common flight style in small birds in which flapping phases alternate with flexed-wing bounds. Body lift is predicted to be essential to making this flight style an aerodynamically attractive flight strategy. To elucidate the contributions of the body and tail to lift and drag during the flexed-wing bound phase, we used particle image velocimetry (PIV) and measured properties...

Aerodynamics of the flying snake Chrysopelea paradisi: how a bluff body cross-sectional shape contributes to gliding performance.

A prominent feature of gliding flight in snakes of the genus Chrysopelea is the unique cross-sectional shape of the body, which acts as the lifting surface in the absence of wings. When gliding, the flying snake Chrysopelea paradisi morphs its circular cross-section into a triangular shape by splaying its ribs and flattening its body in the dorsoventral axis, forming a geometry with fore-aft sy...

Flying snakes: Aerodynamics of body cross-sectional shape

Chrysopelea paradisi, also known as the flying snake, possesses one of the most unique forms of aerial locomotion found in nature, using its entire body as a dynamic lifting surface without the use of wings or membranes. Unlike other airborne creatures, this species lacks appendages to aid in controlling its flight trajectory and producing lift. The snake exhibits exception gliding and maneuver...
