Testing White’s Floristic Impoverishment Hypothesis in the Forest-Savanna Transition Zones of Africa

چکیده

In tropical Africa, forests and savannas are the two most widespread biomes potentially represent alternative stable states with a divergent species composition. A classic, but untested, hypothesis posited by White (1983) suggests that transition zones between contain floristically impoverished assemblage, few representatives from each biome. Further, evolutionary dimension of diversity has received limited attention, despite its importance for understanding biogeographic history biomes. Here, we quantified richness several measures in 1° grid cells, using c. 300,000 occurrence records trees shrubs combined biome affiliation data 3203 species. We found assemblages hold fewer woody than forest savanna zones, as White. However, more phylogenetic expected given their richness, whether one considers separately or together. also show Congo Basin low levels diversity, number species, highlight south-eastern African centre diversity. Regions high both were centred around Dahomey Gap Cameroon, mainly zones. Overall, our study shows even if impoverished, unexpectedly This they important centres innovation diversification and/or serve crossroads, where lineages diversified contrasting environments coexist within single area.

New evidence for hybrid zones of forest and savanna elephants in Central and West Africa.

The African elephant consists of forest and savanna subspecies. Both subspecies are highly endangered due to severe poaching and habitat loss, and knowledge of their population structure is vital to their conservation. Previous studies have demonstrated marked genetic and morphological differences between forest and savanna elephants, and despite extensive sampling, genetic evidence of hybridiz...

determination of maximal singularity free zones in the workspace of parallel manipulator

due to the limiting workspace of parallel manipulator and regarding to finding the trajectory planning of singularity free at workspace is difficult, so finding a best solution that can develop a technique to determine the singularity-free zones in the workspace of parallel manipulators is highly important. in this thesis a simple and new technique are presented to determine the maximal singula...

Fire drives functional thresholds on the savanna-forest transition.

In tropical landscapes, vegetation patches with contrasting tree densities are distributed as mosaics. However, the locations of patches and densities of trees within them cannot be predicted by climate models alone. It has been proposed that plant-fire feedbacks drive functional thresholds at a landscape scale, thereby maintaining open (savanna) and closed (forest) communities as two distinct ...

A Floristic Description of a Neotropical Coastal Savanna in Belize

—The diverse graminoid-dominated savannas of Central America remain poorly described. The flora and environment of a hyperseasonal coastal savanna near Sapodilla Lagoon, Stann Creek District, Belize were examined. Percent cover and frequency using plots and line transects were used to assess the community structure. We used non-metric multidimensional scaling and correlation to describe communi...

The effect of forest fragment characteristics on abundance of Colobus vellerosus in the forest-savanna transition zone of Ghana.

We explore the factors influencing the abundance of Colobus vellerosus in 11 forest fragments [Boabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary and 9 surrounding forest fragments (range: 3.2-190 ha)] in the forest-savanna transition zone of Ghana. We used a 'complete' count for the colobus census in the fragments. We determined the fragment sizes using geographic information system methods and assessed forest fr...
