Territories of Faith: 1000 Years of Landscape Multifunctionality in Santa Mariña de Augas Santas (NW Spain)

Landscape multifunctionality is increasingly recognized as an important aspect in sustainability and developmental debates. Yet, how why a multifunctional landscape configuration develops over time has not been sufficiently studied. Here we present the geoarchaeological investigation of Santa Mariña de Augas Santas site, northwestern Spain. We focus on role religious practice, its interplay with productive strategies, transformation. A geochemical, mineralogical, geochronological characterization pedo-sedimentary record (including XRF, EA-IRMS, XRD, OSL 14C measurements) allowed to characterize catchment scale sedimentation processes relation agricultural activities. The geographical chronological coincidence production functions documented activities demonstrate that both aspects shared spaces during last millennium. Current at thus final outcome specific evolution, but essential traditional land use strategies through history driver change. This work highlights need long-term study when assessing systems.
