TEOS-Based Superhydrophobic Coating for the Protection of Stone-Built Cultural Heritage

نویسندگان

چکیده

Tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) is extensively used in the conservation of stone-built cultural heritage, which often subjected to water-induced degradation processes. The goal this study was produce and a TEOS-based material with ability repel liquid water. A sol solution TEOS 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyl triethoxysilane (FAS) prepared deposited on marble. static contact angles (CAs) water drops coated marble surface were >170° sliding (SA) <5°, suggesting that superhydrophobicity repellency achieved synthesized coating. FTIR SEM-EDS employed characterize produced latter offered good protection against penetration by capillarity, reducing breathability only small extent practically no effect its aesthetic appearance. durability coating evaluated through various tests provided very promising results. Finally, versatility method demonstrated as successfully onto glass, brass, wood, silicon, paper silk, obtained extreme wetting properties.

Poly(hydroxyalkanoate)s-Based Hydrophobic Coatings for the Protection of Stone in Cultural Heritage

Reversibility is a mandatory requirement for materials used in heritage conservation, including hydrophobic protectives. Nevertheless, current protectives for stone are not actually reversible as they remain on the surfaces for a long time after their hydrophobicity is lost and can hardly be removed. Ineffective and aged coatings may jeopardise the stone re-treatability and further conservation...

Multispectral Applications of Infrared Thermography in the Diagnosis and Protection of Built Cultural Heritage

Infrared thermography (IRT) is a powerful non contact imaging technique, appropriate for the protection of cultural heritage. The National Technical University of Athens research team (scientist responsible: A. Moropoulou), started to use this technique in the early 1990s, in all stages of a conservation project, from decay diagnosis to assessment of conservation interventions and monitoring. T...

Copyright Protection and Cultural Heritage

This paper explores the tensions between universal access to cultural heritage online and the varying copyright and other issues that may impinge on this apparent utopia. In particular, we argue for multiple routes to accessing information to avoid monopolistic or commercial dominance of the field. As largely altruistic institutions, cultural organizations should ensure the issues are discussed...

Bioprotection of the built environment and cultural heritage

The growth of microbial biofilms and various biomineralization phenomena can lead to the formation of stable layers and veneers on rocks known as 'rock varnishes' that can stabilize surfaces and protect from further weathering. This article describes the potential application of fungal systems for bioprotection of rock and mineral-based substrates and the evidence to support this concept of uti...
