Temporally sparse data assimilation for the small-scale reconstruction of turbulence

چکیده

Previous works have shown that the small-scale information of incompressible homogeneous isotropic turbulence is fully recoverable as long sufficient large-scale structures are continuously enforced through temporally continuous data assimilation (TCDA). In current work, we show time step can be relaxed to values about 1–2 orders larger than for TCDA, using a sparse (TSDA) strategy, while accuracy still maintained or even slightly better in presence non-negligible errors. One-step (ODA) examined unravel mechanism TSDA. It relaxation effect errors above wavenumber k responsible error decay ODA. Meanwhile, contained large scales propagate into small and make high-wavenumber ([Formula: see text]) noise slower with TCDA This further confirmed by incorporating different levels reference flow field. The advantage TSDA found grow magnitude incorporated Thus, it potentially more beneficial adopt if contain Finally, an outstanding issue raised previous regarding possibility recovering dynamics sub-Kolmogorov direct numerical simulation at Kolmogorov scale resolution also discussed.

Regeneration of small eddies by data assimilation in turbulence.

The effect of data assimilation of large-scale eddies on small-scale eddies in turbulence is studied by direct numerical simulations (DNSs) of Navier-Stokes turbulence with Taylor microscale Reynolds numbers up to 179. The DNSs show that even if the data of small-scale eddies are lost at some initial instant, they can be regenerated from the data of large-scale eddies under the condition that F...

Data Assimilation with sparse GPs

Inferring wind-fields from remote observations poses two issues that need to be tackled: the first one is to represent two-dimensional Gaussian fields, or processes (for each location we have random variables specifying the X-, and Y-directions. The second problem is the inference with the inherently non-tractable likelihood model, governed by the underlying physics governing the wave formation...

Universality of small scale turbulence.

The proposed universality of small scale turbulence is investigated for a set of measurements in a cryogenic free jet with a variation of the Reynolds number (Re) from 8500 to 10(6) (max(R(lambda) approximately 1200). The traditional analysis of the statistics of velocity increments by means of structure functions or probability density functions is replaced by a new method which is based on th...

The Phenomenology of Small-scale Turbulence

Small-scale turbulence has been an area of especially active research in the recent past, and several useful research directions have been pursued. Here, we selectively review this work. The emphasis is on scaling phenomenology and kinematics of small-scale structure. After providing a brief introduction to the classical notions of universality due to Kolmogorov and others, we survey the existi...
