Temporal trends in deep ocean Redfield ratios.

The Redfield ratio [carbon:nitrogen:phosphorus (C:N:P)] of particle flux to the deep ocean is a key factor in marine biogeochemical cycling. Changes in oceanic carbon sequestration have been linked to variations in the Redfield ratio on geological time scales, but this ratio generally is assumed to be constant with time in the modern ocean. However, deep-water Redfield ratios in the northern he...

Biogeochemical cycling in the oligotrophic ocean: Redfield and non-Redfield models

The assumption of fixed elemental ratios in ocean biogeochemical models was tested using the Hawaii Ocean Time-Series data set from the subtropical North Pacific Ocean, where nutrient-starvation is a permanent condition for near-surface phytoplankton populations. Two three-element (C, N, P) ecosystem models were coupled to a mixed-layer model, an inorganic carbon chemistry model, and dynamic po...

Benthic storms: temporal variability in a deep-ocean nepheloid layer.

Time series measurements of light scattering were made for 2(1/2) months at 20 meters above the bottom in the western North Atlantic. The highest values recorded with the nephelometer exceeded all previous measurements worldwide. Rapid changes indicated a high degree of activity near the sea floor, and some increases may have been related to atmospheric storms.

What story is told by oceanic tracer concentrations?

In their report "Temporal trends in deep ocean Redfield ratios" (4 Feb., p. 831), Pahlow and Riebesell suggest that the marine biota has changed in the last few decades in response to human activities. These findings challenge the steady-state paradigm of ocean biogeochemistry and might have important implications for the global carbon cycle. However, the signals that Pahlow and Riebesell analy...

Redfield Ratios in Inland Waters: Higher Biological Control of C:N:P Ratios in Tropical Semi-arid High Water Residence Time Lakes

The canonical Redfield C:N:P ratio for algal biomass is often not achieved in inland waters due to higher C and N content and more variability when compared to the oceans. This has been attributed to much lower residence times and higher contributions of the watershed to the total organic matter pool of continental ecosystems. In this study we examined the effect of water residence times in low...
