Temporal factors and distance to human settlement affect nest survival of the endangered Yellow-headed Parrot in Belize, Central America

Abstract The endangered Yellow-headed Parrot (Amazona oratrix) has experienced a considerable reduction in abundance and distribution. Identifying natural anthropogenic causes of nest failure is critical step towards developing conservation actions that increase survival. In this study, we examined daily survival relation to temporal, habitat, factors, as well site properties. We monitored nests (n = 124) across 6 study sites Belize during 2017 2018 independently modeled the effects predation, abandonment poaching on rates. Overall, estimated cumulative probability was 0.18 (95% CI: 0.12–0.25). Predation main cause failure, followed by abandonment, poaching. Our results showed predation usually occurred early nesting cycle. Day within season negatively influenced for abandoned had quadratic effect poached nests.
