Temporal and spatial dispersal of <i>Thekopsora areolata</i> basidiospores, aeciospores, and urediniospores

Cherry spruce rust causes huge yield losses in Norway seed production Fennoscandia. The causal agent, Thekopsora areolata, has three types of spores that disperse during spring: basidiospores are produced on basidia grow out from teliospores overwintered bird cherry leaf litter to infect new pistillate cones, aeciospores released old diseased cones leaves, and urediniospores leaves for reinfection. No study examined the dispersal T. areolata spores, including cause primary infection cones. In this study, were germinated laboratory morphology was described. sampled Ultuna, Sweden Joutsa, Finland with 21 spore traps at each site. Peaks observed 11 25 May 2 8 June Finnish site, 4 18 Swedish Urediniospores first 2–3 weeks after peaks they mainly distributed within 10 m trees. 1–2 basidiospore detection coincided multiple rain events. peak overlapped pollen but not Sweden. quantities different 100 source had no gradient.
