چکیده

Hourly, year-round flow cytometry has made it possible to relate seasonal environmental variability the population dynamics of smallest, most abundant phytoplankton on Northeast US Shelf. To evaluate whether insights from these data extend Synechococcus farther shore, we analyze measurements continuously underway systems 21 cruises traveling between Martha's Vineyard Coastal Observatory (MVCO) and continental shelf break. We describe how patterns in Synechococcus, which have been documented detail at MVCO, occur across region with subtle variation. find that underlying relationship temperature division rate is consistent can explain much observed spatial concentration. Connecting individual cell properties annual regional conditions, results demonstrate value autonomous monitoring create an improved picture picophytoplankton within economically important ecosystem.

Modeling the dynamics of continental shelf carbon.

Continental margin systems are important contributors to global nutrient and carbon budgets. Effort is needed to quantify this contribution and how it will be modified under changing patterns of climate and land use. Coupled models will be used to provide projections of future states of continental margin systems. Thus, it is appropriate to consider the limitations that impede the development o...

NOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE Dissipative Losses in Nonlinear Internal Waves Propagating across the Continental Shelf

A single nonlinear internal wave tracked more than 100 wavelengths across Oregon’s continental shelf over a 12-h period exhibited nearly constant wave speed, c 0.75 m s , and amplitude, a 15 m. The wavelength L gradually decreased from 220 m in 170-m water depth to 60 m in 70-m water depth. As the water shallowed beyond 50 m, the wave became unrecognizable as such. The total energy decreased fr...

Direct observations of American eels migrating across the continental shelf to the Sargasso Sea

Since inferring spawning areas from larval distributions in the Sargasso Sea a century ago, the oceanic migration of adult American eels has remained a mystery. No adult eel has ever been observed migrating in the open ocean or in the spawning area. Here, we track movements of maturing eels equipped with pop-up satellite archival tags from the Scotian Shelf (Canada) into the open ocean, with on...

Summertime cooling of the shallow continental shelf

[1] In summer on the shallow New England continental shelf, near the coast the water temperature is much cooler than the observed surface heat flux suggests. Using depth‐integrated heat budgets in 12 and 27 m water depth calculated from observed surface heat flux, water temperature, and velocity, we demonstrate that on time scales of weeks to months the water is persistently cooled due to a mea...
