Temperature Gradients Across the Pacific Ocean During the Middle Miocene

چکیده

Sea surface temperatures (SSTs) of the tropical Pacific Ocean exert powerful controls on regional and global climates. Previous studies have suggested that during warm climate phases, east-west temperature gradient collapsed. To date, there has been no high-resolution reconstruction sea conditions in both east west Miocene Climate Optimum (MCO) across middle transition (MMCT); therefore, our understanding mean oceanographic state this major climatic shift is limited. Here, we present new SST reconstructions for eastern (15.5–13.3 Ma) which show a clear ∼4°C warmest interval Neogene, implying processes produce modern were active. There MMCT indicating was not impacted by cooling ice growth. We find 2°C equatorial Pacific, lags benthic foraminiferal δ18O positive 150 kyr, did decrease synchronously with expansion Antarctic sheet. Reconstructed variations composition seawater, determined combining Mg/Ca records, reveal freshening after 13.8 Ma, suggesting changes hydrological cycle fronts response to icehouse regime.

Observed Strengthening of the Zonal Sea Surface Temperature Gradient across the Equatorial Pacific Ocean*

Decadal variations of very small amplitude [;0.38C in sea surface temperature (SST)] in the tropical Pacific Ocean, the genesis region of the interannual El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon, have been shown to have powerful impacts on global climate. Future projections from different climate models do not agree on how this critical feature will change under the influence of anthropog...

Middle Miocene Southern Ocean cooling and Antarctic cryosphere expansion.

Magnesium/calcium data from Southern Ocean planktonic foraminifera demonstrate that high-latitude (approximately 55 degrees S) southwest Pacific sea surface temperatures (SSTs) cooled 6 degrees to 7 degrees C during the middle Miocene climate transition (14.2 to 13.8 million years ago). Stepwise surface cooling is paced by eccentricity forcing and precedes Antarctic cryosphere expansion by appr...

Miocene to recent eolian dust record from the Southwest Pacific Ocean at 40° S latitude

A 14-meter long pelagic clay core recovered at Marlin Rise (40°00.531′S, 154°2.601′W; 4775 m water depth) in the Southwest Pacific Basin contains a record of eolian dust deposited since the early Miocene. Downcore analysis of detrital minerals reveals a dominantly eolian signature with relatively constant proportions of quartz, feldspar and illite and trace amounts of chlorite, kaolinite and sm...

Temperature and Density Gradients across the Nucleus of M82

This Letter presents CO , CO , CO , and CO spectra of the irregular J p 3–2 J p 3–2 J p 3–2 J p 2–1 starburst galaxy M82 taken with the 15 m James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. All maps exhibit a double-peaked morphology, despite evidence that the higher J transitions are optically thick. This morphology suggests that the double-peaked structure is not the result of an edge-on torus of molecular gas...
