Task-oriented reading efficiency: interplay of general cognitive ability, task demands, strategies and reading fluency

Abstract The associations among readers’ cognitive skills (general ability, reading skills, and attentional functioning), task demands (easy versus difficult questions), process measures (total fixation time on relevant irrelevant paragraphs) was investigated to explain task-oriented accuracy efficiency (number of scores in a given unit). Structural equation modeling applied large dataset collected with sixth-grade students, which included samples dysfluent readers those attention difficulties. results are line previous findings regarding the dominant role general ability reading. However, mostly explained by shorter viewing times both paragraph types (i.e., irrelevant), were modestly fluency. These suggest that high orientation is obtained relying selective strategy when paragraphs. seems be specifically learned, this potentially applies most even low abilities.
