چکیده

Dental caries was the most common disease in both adults and children. Streptococcus mutans is main bacteria causing plaque formation initiator of dental caries. Antibacterials derived from plants can be used to prevent formation. Taro (Colosia esculenta) has been traditional medicine. Antibacterial compounds have discovered C. esculenta leaves. This study aimed determine ability leaf ethanol extract inhibit growth S. ATCC 31987. Simplicia preparation, phytochemical screening carried out. Then, antibacterial activity test performed using disc diffusion method zone inhibition at various concentrations 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70%. Colosia contains alkaloids, flavonoids, triterpenoids, saponins, produces an each concentration variation. Very strong produced a 70% 21.11±0.46 mm, which higher than positive control.

Scanning Electron Microscopic study of Piper betle L. leaves extract effect against Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175

INTRODUCTION Previous studies have shown that Piper betle L. leaves extract inhibits the adherence of Streptococcus mutans to glass surface, suggesting its potential role in controlling dental plaque development. OBJECTIVES In this study, the effect of the Piper betle L. extract towards S. mutans (with/without sucrose) using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and on partially purified cell-as...

Anti-biofilm Activities from Bergenia crassifolia Leaves against Streptococcus mutans

Streptococcus mutans has been reported as a primary cariogenic pathogen associated with dental caries. The bacteria can produce glucosyltransferases (Gtfs) to synthesize extracellular polysaccharides (EPSs) that are known as virulence factors for adherence and formation of biofilms. Therefore, an ideal inhibitor for dental caries is one that can inhibit planktonic bacteria growth and prevent bi...

Genetic Diversification and Dispersal of Taro (Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott)

Taro (Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott) is widely distributed in tropical and sub-tropical areas. However, its origin, diversification and dispersal remain unclear. While taro genetic diversity has been documented at the country and regional levels in Asia and the Pacific, few reports are available from Americas and Africa where it has been introduced through human migrations. We used eleven mic...

Characterization of 11 new microsatellite loci in taro (Colocasia esculenta).

Eleven new microsatellite markers were isolated from taro, Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott, a root crop widely distributed all over the world. Forty-eight primer pairs were designed from a microsatellite-enriched genomic library, of which 11 primer pairs have polymorphisms in 30 individuals tested from a population in China, which revealed two to six alleles per locus with the observed and expe...

TARO “Colocasia esculenta”: It’s Utilization in Food Products in Ghana

In the past, only about 10% of the World population used root crops as the major staple, [1] but presently the diet of most Ghanaians is based on roots and tubers, and on processed cereal grains. The common roots and tubers utilized in Ghana are mostly cassava, yam and cocoyam. Cereals such as rice, maize and sorghum are also greatly patronized. However, there are other important roots and tube...
