چکیده

ABSTRACT Using photometric ULTRACAM observations of three new short-period cataclysmic variables (CVs), we model the primary eclipse light curves to extract orbital separation, masses, and radii their component stars. We find donor masses $0.060\pm 0.008\, {\rm M_\odot }$, $0.042\pm 0.001\, 0.004\, two being very low-mass sub-stellar donors, one within 2σ hydrogen burning limit. All systems lie close empirical evolutionary sequence that has emerged from last decade. briefly re-evaluate long-standing discrepancy between observed mass radius data, theoretical CV tracks. By looking at difference in period each predicted by modelled sequences, qualitatively examine form excess angular momentum loss is missing models below gap. show indications grows importance relative gravitational losses as decreases. Detailed are necessary draw more quantitative conclusions future.

The systemic velocities of four long-period cataclysmic variable stars

Although a large number of orbital periods of cataclysmic variable stars (CVs) have been measured, comparison of period and luminosity distributions with evolutionary theory is affected by strong selection effects. A test has been discovered which is independent of these selection effects and is based upon the kinematics of CVs (Kolb & Stehle, 1996). If the standard models of evolution are corr...

The Secondary Stars in Short Period (Magnetic) Cataclysmic Variables

We review the recent knowledge base pertaining to causes for mass accretion variations (high/low states) in highly magnetic cataclysmic variables (i.e. polars). We then examine what theory has to say about the properties of the secondary stars (the mass donors) with respect to those CVs with very short orbital periods. Finally, we use recent observations of EF Eri in an extended low state to pr...

The Lower Main Sequence and the Orbital Period Distribution of Cataclysmic Variable Stars

The color-magnitude diagram of the lower main sequence, as measured from a volume-limited sample of nearby stars, shows an abrupt downward jump between MV ∼ 12 and 13. This jump indicates that the observed mass-radius relationship steepens between 0.3 and 0.2 M⊙, but theoretical models show no such effect. It is difficult to isolate the source of this disagreement: the observational mass-radius...

EUVE Investigation of Three Short-Period Binary Stars

EUVE satellite spectroscopic observations (SW, MW and LW bands covering 80 – 160, 170 – 350 and 450 Å with resolutions 0.5, 1 and 2 Å) and photometric observations (Deep Sky Survey, broad-band 70 – 140 Å) have been obtained for two contact, 44i Boo B and VW Cep, and one detached, ER Vul, close binary stars. All three systems have orbital periods shorter than one day and thus are expected to sho...
