Symmetry, Symmetry Breaking and Topology
The ground state of a system with symmetry can be described by a group G. This symmetry groupG can be discrete or continuous. Thus for a crystalG is a finite group while for the vacuum state of a grand unified theory G is a continuous Lie group. The ground state symmetry described by G can change spontaneously from G to one of its subgroups H as the external parameters of the system are modifie...
متن کاملFrom Symmetry Breaking to Topology Change I
By means of an analogy with Classical Mechanics and Geometrical Optics, we are able to reduce Lagrangians to a kinetic term only. This form enables us to examine the extended solution set of field theories by finding the geodesics of this kinetic term’s metric. This new geometrical standpoint sheds light on some foundational issues of QFT and brings to the forefront core aspects of field theory.
متن کاملSymmetry Breaking in Star-Topology Decoupled Search
Symmetry breaking is a well-known method for search reduction. It identifies state-space symmetries prior to search, and prunes symmetric states during search. A recent proposal, star-topology decoupled search, is to search not in the state space, but in a factored version thereof, which avoids the multiplication of states across leaf components in an underlying star-topology structure. We show...
متن کاملGauge Invariance and Symmetry Breaking by Topology and Energy Gap
For the description of observables and states of a quantum system, it may be convenient to use a canonical Weyl algebra of which only a subalgebra A, with a non-trivial center Z , describes observables, the other Weyl operators playing the role of intertwiners between inequivalent representations ofA. In particular, this gives rise to a gauge symmetry described by the action of Z . A distinguis...
متن کاملSymmetry and Symmetry Breaking in Electrostatic MEMS
The use of electrostatic forces to provide actuation is a method of central importance in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and is of growing importance in nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS). The study of electrostatic actuation has led to numerous interesting experimental, theoretical, and numerical results. Yet, surprisingly, even simple electrostatically actuated systems have secrets t...
