Context The Acland Land System overlying the Walloon sandstone coal deposits in southern Queensland is generally marginal for cropping but well suited to grazing, and thus cultivated land commonly returned pasture. Rehabilitation of these lands after open-cut mining seeks be safe, stable self-sustaining satisfy requirements ecologically sustainable development. Aims present paper evaluates sustainability economic viability beef production on (a) retired from cultivation then rehabilitated with sown pastures at New mine site, (b) similar nearby pasture that were not mined also cultivation. Methods GRASP grazing systems model was modified calibrated short-term (5-year) trial data (soil, cattle observations), used long-term (60-year) weather estimate effects type, rundown, climate pressure productivity returns. three sites 15 unmined evaluated, including six commercial properties.
